Tracking service instances is essential for understanding the functional role of a device in your infrastructure. While the device record tells you about the hardware and OS, the Service Instances section reveals what the device is actually doing, whether it is acting as a web server, a database node, or a background processing unit. This data is critical for troubleshooting, capacity planning, and mapping business applications.
This article provides an overview of how to identify and monitor the various services running on a specific device within your inventory.
Prerequisites
You need the following before managing service instances:
Access to the IT Asset Management module in your Freshservice instance.
Administrator privileges to edit device records.
Add service instances
To add or view services running on a device, follow these steps:
Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory, select a device record, and click Edit.
In the Information tab, locate the Service Instances section and click + Add New.
Enter the required details for the service and click Update.
To view more details about a specific service (such as the start time, file path, or associated user), click the service name to go to its dedicated record.
