If you signed up earlier, refer to the existing ITAM documentation. In Freshservice, Power Distribution Units (PDUs) are tracked as distinct infrastructure components. While you can add a PDU as a basic standalone record, mapping it to a device allows you to track advanced details like IP addresses, lifecycle states, and asset tags.
This article provides an overview of managing PDUs within the inventory, including how to add new units, map them to devices for asset tracking, and manage automatically generated ports.
Prerequisites
You need the following before managing PDUs:
Access to the IT Asset Management module in your Freshservice instance.
Administrator privileges or specific permissions to create and edit PDUs records.
Add a new PDU
To create a PDU record, follow these steps:
Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > Power Units and click Add new.
Provide details to the following fields in the Details section:
Optionally, use the following mapping sections to define relationships between the PDU and other infrastructure components:
Device mapping: Link your PDU to a device to track IP addresses, lifecycles, and other asset details.
Gateway PDU mapping: If the PDU is daisy-chained, identify the "Gateway PDU" it is plugged into.
Rack Info: Link your PDU to a rack.
Click Save.
Caution: When you click Save, Freshservice generates ports based on the port layout defined in the chosen Power unit model. Ports can only be added during PDU creation and cannot be modified later.
Map a PDU to a device
By default, PDU records focus on power distribution. If you need to track asset-level data, such as purchase dates, serial numbers, or maintenance history, you must map the PDU to a device record.
To map a PDU to a device, follow these steps:
1. Create the placeholder device
Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > All Devices and click Add new.
Set the Type to physical.
Set the Physical Subtype to PDU.
Recommendation: Give the device the same name as your PDU for consistent searching.
Click Save.
2. Link the PDU to the device
Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > Power Units and click an existing PDU record.
Go to the Device mapping section and click + Add.
Select the device you created in the previous step.
Click Update.
3. Navigate between records
Once mapped, the records are bi-directionally linked. You can click the device name within the PDU view to jump to the device's asset details, or click the PDU link within the device view to return to the power configuration.
