A device cluster is a logical grouping of devices that functions behind a single name or IP address. Defining a cluster allows you to manage these grouped assets as a single entity while maintaining the individual properties of the underlying hardware nodes.

This article provides an overview of device clusters, including how to create new cluster records and associate multiple devices under a single logical grouping.

Prerequisites

You need the following before managing clusters:

  • Access to the IT Asset Management module in your Freshservice instance.

  • Administrator privileges to create and edit device records.

  • Existing device records (physical or virtual) to serve as members of the cluster.

Create a new cluster

To create a new cluster device, follow these steps:

  1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory and click Add new

  2. Enter details to the following mandatory fields:

    • Name: A name for the device.

    • Workspace: Select the workspace associated with the device.

    • Type: Select Cluster. The page refreshes to reveal cluster-specific options.

    • Service Level: Select an appropriate service level from the list. By default, new devices are set to Production.

    • Usage Type: Select how the device is used - Permanent or Loaner.

  3. In the Devices in Cluster field, search the existing device.

  4. Select the relevant devices to add them to the cluster.
Note: To add a new device that does not yet exist in the inventory, click Add new Device.

  5. Click Save.

Change an existing device type to a cluster

You can reclassify an existing device as a cluster if its role in your infrastructure changes.

Caution: Changing the device type to cluster will result in the loss of all data specific to the device's previous type, such as rack locations for physical devices or host information for virtual devices.

To update device type, follow these steps:

  1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory and go to the device you want to modify.

  2. Click Edit in the upper-right corner.

  3. In the Type dropdown menu, change the selection to cluster.

  4. Associate the relevant member devices using the Devices in Cluster field.

  5. Click Update.
