A DNS zone is a distinct portion of the DNS namespace that is managed by a specific organization or administrator. In Freshservice, you can maintain these zones to ensure your network documentation accurately reflects your DNS infrastructure.

You can add DNS zones manually or, preferably, use DNS auto-discovery.

This article provides instructions on how to manage DNS zones within your infrastructure, including manual creation and editing of zone records.

Prerequisites

You need the following before managing DNS zones:

  • Access to the IT Asset Management module in your Freshservice instance.

  • Administrator privileges or specific permissions to create and edit DNS zone records.

Add a DNS zone

To manually add a new DNS zone to your inventory, follow these steps:

  1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > DNS Zones and click Add new.

  2. In the Zone Name field, enter the domain name for the zone.

  3. In the Nameserver field, enter the nameserver associated with the zone.

  4. (Optional) Provide additional context using these fields:

    • VRF Group: Select a VRF group to which the zone belongs.

    • Tags: Add relevant tags for easier searching and filtering.

    • Notes: Enter any internal notes regarding the zone's purpose or owner.

  5. Click Save.

Once saved, the new entry will appear alongside existing records on the DNS Zones list page.

Edit a DNS zone

To update information for an existing DNS zone, follow these steps:

  1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > DNS Zones and click the name of the DNS zone you want to modify.

  2. Click Edit in the upper-right corner.

  3. Update the zone-specific fields as needed and click Update.
