Device properties encompass the critical technical specifications of an asset, ranging from raw hardware capacity to its network identity. By tracking CPU, RAM, and OS details, you can monitor resource allocation across your infrastructure.

This article provides an overview of managing a device's core hardware properties, operating system details, network connectivity, and naming aliases.

Prerequisites

You need the following before managing device properties:

  • Access to the IT Asset Management module in your Freshservice instance.

  • Administrator privileges to edit device records and network settings.

  • Active autodiscovery jobs if you intend to populate hardware and OS data automatically.

  • Software Asset Normalization and Enrichment enabled for automated vendor support and lifecycle data population.

View device properties

  1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory from the left navigation pane.

  2. Select a device record.

  3. Access the following data from the Information tab:

    • CPU Memory HardDisk

    • Operating System Installation

    • Ports

    • IP Addresses

    • Device Alias

Configure CPU, memory, and HDD details

  1. In the Information tab, select the Details section.

  2. Locate the CPU Memory HardDisk area.

  3. Review or manually enter data in the Total CPUsCores/CPUCPU Speed, and RAM fields.

  4. (Optional) Select Don't change via API to prevent autodiscovery from overwriting your manual entries.

Manage device operating systems

  1. In the Information tab, locate the Operating System Installation section.

  2. Review the OSOS version, and OS Version # fields.
    Notes:

  • If Software Asset Normalization and Enrichment is active, vendor details such as End of Life and End of Support may be autopopulated.

  • If the Operating System fields are blank, you may need to rerun autodiscovery.

  1. To exclude the OS from compliance totals, uncheck Count In Licensing.

  2. Select Don’t change via API/Discovery/Enrichment to protect manual OS data from being overwritten.

Add IP addresses and ports

To add an IP address:

  1. In the IP Addresses section, click + Add New.

  2. Select an existing IP from the dropdown menu, or click Add new IP Address to create a new one.

To add a port:

  1. In the Ports section, select + Add New or + Add Existing to establish connections.

  2. Enter the required details, such as the Port NameType of Port, and Description.

  3. To delete an obsolete connection, click the Delete (trash can) icon.

Configure device aliases

  1. In the Device Alias section, click + Add New.

  2. Enter the alias name and toggle Is Preferred to set the primary display name.

  3. (Optional) Add a Non-Authoritative Alias to associate a nickname or secondary label with the device.

Notes:
- Only the preferred alias is used for device matching during autodiscovery jobs. However, you can search for devices using any authoritative alias.
- The preferred alias is the name used in topology maps, and dependency charts. It is also the name displayed when a device is added to a business application.
